Universal Printing Maintenance

Overview

Over time, it is possible that drivers need to be recreated for maintenance or cleanup of redirected printers which have become obsolete.

This article outlines the necessary steps to cleanup and remove drivers from old redirected printers.

Resolution

A driver is created automatically when a printer gets redirected to the RDS server. The default naming convention of redirected printers is: %PRINTERNAME% for %USERNAME%.

To delete old drivers, follow these steps:

Windows Server:

  1. Access Printers & Scanners on your Server.
  2. Click on Print Server Properties.
  3. Switch to the Drivers tab.

or from an elevated Command Prompt prompt type:

    printui /t2 /s

  4. Remove all Parallels printers (except for the main Parallels Universal Printer) such that there is only 2X Universal Printer left:

If the printer is not being used by a logged on user, it can be removed immediately. The driver will be recreated automatically when the user attempts to log back in.
