Unable to start Virtual Machine - EFI Boot

Symptoms

The virtual machine loads with some EFI Shell commands:

alttext

Cause

EFI Boot is enabled in the virtual machine configuration.

Resolution

For Parallels Desktop 13 and newer versions:

  1. Make sure that the virtual machine is shutdown.

    NOTE: To shutdown a virtual machine use the following menus from the top menu bar: Actions > Shut Down or Actions > Stop.

  2. Open your virtual machine's configuration. Then go to Hardware > Boot Order and expand Advanced Settings section.
  3. Copy and paste the following system flag:

    vm.bios.efi=0
    
    alttext
  4. Close configuration window and start the virtual machine.

For Parallels Desktop 12 and 11:

  1. Make sure that the virtual machine is shutdown.

    NOTE: To shutdown a virtual machine use the following menus from the top menu bar: Actions > Shut Down or Actions > Stop respectively.

  2. Open your virtual machine's configuration > Hardware > Boot Order > Advanced Settings > Uncheck Use EFI Boot option:

    alttext
  3. Close configuration window and start the virtual machine.
