Fixing Parallels Tools and Network issues on macOS 15.4+ virtual machines on Intel-based Macs

Users running macOS virtual machine 15.4 or later  on Intel-based Macs may experience issues with Parallels Tools not functioning correctly.

Symptoms include loss of network connectivity, malfunctioning of the prlctl exec command, and general instability of Parallels Tools within the macOS virtual machine.

This article outlines a workaround to resolve these issues by manually installing specific Parallels Tools components and adjusting network settings :

1. Start the affected macOS 15.4+ virtual machine.

2. From the Mac menu bar, go to Devices > CD/DVD > Connect Image… :


3. In the Open window navigate to Applications > Parallels Desktop > Contents > Resources.

4. Inside the Resources folder, go to the Tools folder, and locate the file prl-tools-mac.iso. Click on this file, then click the Open button.

5.  Inside the running macOS virtual machine, open Finder, and in the menu bar, click Go > Go to Folder...

6. Enter the following path and press Enter:

/Volumes/Parallels Tools/Install.app/Contents/Resources/Install.mpkg/Contents/Packages

7. In the opened window, double-click the following packages to install them:

7. After installation, follow on-screen prompts to approve system extensions:

8. Click the Apple menu () > System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security and click on Allow, and ensure to restart your Mac.

9. Make sure that the virtual machine is shut down. If it is in a suspended state, please run it and then shut down (Actions > Shut Down).

10. Open the Virtual Machine's Configuration, select Options >  Hardware and select Network. Click on Advanced... > Set the Type to Realtek from the dropdown menu.

 


If your issue is limited to network connectivity on macOS 15.4+ virtual machines on Intel Mac, you may apply the following workaround to restore the network functionality:

1. Make sure that the virtual machine is shut down. If it is in a suspended state, please run it and then shut down (Actions > Shut Down).

2. Open the Virtual Machine's Configuration, select Options >  Hardware and select Boot Orfer. Click on Advanced... 

3. Add the below string Boot Flags field:

devices.net.modern_virtio=1

4. Click on Ok to save the configuration.

Note: This work-around will restore only the network functionality.
