How to boot virtual machine in the Recovery Mode?

  • Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac Home Edition



  1. Open OS X System Preferences -> Keyboard and make sure Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standart function keys option is enabled (checked):


  2. Open your Virtual Machine Configuration pane -> Hardware -> Boot order and check "Select boot device on startup".


  3. Start your Virtual Machine and make its window active (click on it).

  4. Press F8 before the Windows screen appears (Windows 8.1 can require pressing Shift+F8).

    NOTE: for better result we recommend to click on the Virtual machine window and press F8 repeatedly until you get to the Advanced Boot Option screen. If the first attempt fails, shut down virtual machine and try again

  5. On the Windows Advanced Boot Option screen use the arrow keys to select the Repair your Computer, and then press Enter.


    Windows will also ask you to choose language and enter your credentials.

    If you use Windows 8.1, the choose Troubleshoot option:


  6. When working in the Recovery mode is finished you can disable "Select boot device on startup" (Virtual Machine configuration -> Hardware -> Boot order).

NOTE: if your virtual machine doesn't have a system recovery partition, then you will not be able to boot into Recovery mode. In this case you will need to boot virtual machine from the installation media. For the additional details, please refer to this article
