Virtual machine does not start: Trying to boot from SATA drive

Symptoms

• After starting my virtual machine Windows doesn't boot. It holds on the message:

  Trying to boot from SATA drive 1...`
  

Cause

A master boot record (MBR) or a boot sector is corrupted.

Resolution

You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair the following items in Windows:

• A master boot record (MBR).
• A boot sector.
• A Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store.
