Windows or Mac shortcuts do not work in Mac OS X virtual machine

  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac Standard Edition

My Mac (CMD+Q and CMD+W) or Windows (e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) specific shortcuts do not work in my Mac OS X virtual machine.

Whenever I use them, they are applied to host OS side. As a result, CMD+Q key combination quits Parallels Desktop and CMD+W closes Parallels window. Windows shortcuts make no effect at all.

This is default behavior of Mac OS X installed on the host side.

Take these steps to workaround the issue:

  1. Launch Parallels Desktop for Mac.

  2. Click on Parallels Desktop menu and choose Preferences.

  3. Click on Keyboard tab.

  4. In Profile section choose Mac OS X.

  5. Press the + sign.

  6. Select CMD and put Q both to From and To fields.

  7. Follow steps 1 to 6 for CMD+W key combination.

  8. Start your virtual machine. Now CMD+Q and CMD+W should work inside the virtual machine.
