Critical error when starting the virtual machine on Mac OS X

Symptoms

After upgrading Parallels Desktop for Mac, I receive the following error message:

    The virtual machine cannot be started due to a critical error.

Resolution

  1. Open the virtual machine configuration.
  2. Locate Hardware > Boot Order > Advanced Settings > in Boot flags field type in the following command:

    vm.app_mode=32
    
  3. Start the virtual machine.

If the virtual machine still does not start, remove the boot flag and start the virtual machine again.
