Symptoms

I could not resize a hard disk of my virtual machine. The error appeared:

  Unable to resize this hard disk. Its file system might be corrupted.

Cause

Windows filesystem is corrupted

Resolution

NOTE: This is strongly recommended to create a backup of virtual machine.

  1. Check Windows hard disk for errors as described here: How to check Windows hard disk for errors

  2. Start Windows.

  3. Go to Start -> at the the search bar type 'cmd' and run Command Prompt ( right-click on 'cmd' -> Run as administrator)

  4. Execute the command:

        sfc /scannow       (hit Return/Enter)

  1. Shut down virtual machine and try to resize it: How to give more hard disk space to a Windows virtual machine.

  2. After a successful resize if you will see that in Windows Explorer size is the same - please follow this article:
