ERROR: 15477 "some of the required components are missing from the operating system of your Mac"

Symptoms

When you start Parallels Desktop or a virtual achine you get this error message:

"some of the required components are missing from the operating system of your Mac"

Problem ID: 15477

Cause

Some essential OS X system utilities necessary for Parallels Desktop or your virtual machine to load and run are missing or inaccessible on your Mac.

To check the exact reason for the error:

  1. Open Applications -> Utilities -> Console.app.
  2. Select /var/log/install.log
  3. Type "inittool" in the search field.

  4. Check whether the strings like in the example below can be found:

    > Oct 2 12:52:00 test inittool[123]: Fatal: 'grep' is missing

    In this example the grep command-line utility cannot be found in the default system search paths like /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin and /usr/sbin.

    Other utitlies that should be checked for are sed, kextload, kextunload, kextstat, sudo, codesign and some other system utilities.

This issue may be caused by some third-party applications installed on your Mac. Some "OS X cleanup" utilities are known for causing such issues.

Resolution

Reinstall OS X or restore it from a backup.
