Sound or built-in Camera does not work in virtual machine

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac Standard Edition

Symptoms

  • Sound or built-in Camera does not work in virtual machine

  • In the Device manager sound or camera adapter is marked with exclamation mark.

  • Parallels Tools are properly installed

Cause

  • Windows registry misconfiguration / conflicting drivers

Resolution for Sound issue

  1. Start your Virtual Machine.

  2. Create a Snapshot (to have a possibility to revert all the changes): In Parallels Desktop menu bar go: Virtual Machine -> Take Snapshot.

  3. Go to Start -> in the search box type regedit and open Registry Editor (In Windows XP: Start -> Run -> in the box type regedit and open Registry Editor).

  4. Locate and highlight the following branch

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    
  5. In the Data tab find and delete the values LowerFilters and UpperFilters:

  6. Go Start -> in the Search box type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter (return) > right-click on the sound adapter -> uninstall.

  7. Restart Windows virtual machine.

    If the issue still persists: repeat steps 3-4, then:

  8. Expand the {4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} branch and delete all the keys, in which ProviderName value IS NOT Parallels or Microsoft. Also, do not touch Properties key.

    Here are examples of DO NOT DELETE keys in which ProviderName value is Parallels and Microsoft.

  9. Repeat steps 6, 7.

  10. Delete the Snapshot: In Parallels Desktop menu bar go: Virtual Machine -> Manage Snapshots....

Resolution for Camera issue

Note: the solution is applied only for buit-in Camera.

  1. Start your Virtual Machine.

  2. Create a Snapshot (to have a possibility to revert all the changes): In Parallels Desktop menu bar go: Virtual Machine -> Take a Snapshot.

  3. Go to Start -> in the search box type regedit and open Registry Editor (In Windows XP: Start -> Run -> in the box type regedit and open Registry Editor).

  4. Locate and highlight the following branch

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
    
  5. In the Data tab find and delete the values LowerFilters and UpperFilters:

  6. Go Start -> in the Search box type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter (return) > right-click on the sound adapter -> uninstall.

  7. Restart Windows virtual machine.

    If the issue still persists: repeat steps 3-4, then:

  8. Expand the {6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} branch and delete all the keys, which ARE NOT USB Video Device by Microsoft. Also, do not touch Properties key.

    Here is the example of DO NOT DELETE key in which ProviderName value is Microsoft.

  10. Delete the Snapshot: In Parallels Desktop menu bar go: Virtual Machine -> Manage Snapshots....
