ISSUE
You upgraded to or installed Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac and Parallels Tools fail to be installed in your Windows XP/Vista/7 virtual machine.
CAUSE
There can be many reasons, the main two of which are:1. Parallels Tools installation was interfered with by some process in Windows. To minimize the risk of this kind of issue in future please do not perform any operations in Windows while Parallels Tools installation is in progress.
2. There is a software conflict inside Windows.
In any of the cases above, please follow the below steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
RESOLUTION
Follow these troubleshooting sections in the same order in which they are presented:
Search for an error message in Knowledgebase
If Parallels Tools installation fails to install and you see a specific error message, please search kb.parallels.com and include the error message code and the version of Parallels Desktop in the Search field.
Uninstall & install Parallels Tools
If Parallels Tools installation fails or hangs without a specific error message, follow these steps to fix the problem.
NOTE: We strongly recommend that you make a backup of the virtual machine before proceeding.
1. Start your virtual machine and cancel Parallels Tools installation wizard.
2. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove programs and remove Parallels Tools from the list of apps.
3. Restart Windows.
4. Install Parallels Tools by clicking on Virtual Machine --> Install Parallels Tools.
Uninstall antivirus software
If the issue persists, please try the following:
Temporarily uninstall all antivirus software from the virtual machine and retry the steps in the "Uninstall & install Parallels Tools" section above.
Do not forget to install the antivirus software back, once the problem is resolved.
We recommend you to use Kaspersky Internet Security which comes with Parallels Desktop 6 bundle. It was tested in virtual environments and generally doesn't block parallels tools installation.
Uninstall, clean up & install Parallels Tools
If the issue persists, please try the following:
1. Boot Windows.
2. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall Parallels Tools if it is present.
3. Go to "My Computer" > "C" Drive > "Program Files" > "Parallels" folder and delete the "Parallels Tools" folder, if present.
4. Click the Windows "Start" menu -> "Run" and type "regedit". Hit OK.
5. IIn Registry Editor, go to "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry, and go to "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry.
6. Reboot Windows.
7. Now install Parallels Tools from the "Virtual Machine" menu on the Parallels Desktop menu bar while Windows is running.
Uninstall, clean up, delete temporary files & install Parallels Tools
If the issue still persists, please try the following:
1. Boot Windows.
2. Go to "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall Parallels Tools if it is present.
3. Go to "My Computer" > "C" Drive > "Program Files" > "Parallels" folder and delete the "Parallels Tools" folder, if present.
4. Click the Windows "Start" menu -> "Run" and type "regedit". Hit OK.
5. IIn Registry Editor, go to "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry, and go to "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Parallels" and delete the "Parallels Tools" entry.
6. Go to "Start" > in search field type 'Run' and hit 'Enter/Return' > type %temp% and hit 'Return' > select all files under this Temp folder and delete them permanently (also from Recycle Bin).
7. Go to "Start" > in search field type 'msconfig' and hit 'Return'> select Services tab > check the Hide all Microsoft Services check-box and uncheck all the listed services except Parallels services (having 'prl_' suffix in their name) -> Click on 'Ok' -> Click on 'Restart'.
8. Make sure Windows restarts.
9. Now install Parallels Tools from the "Virtual Machine" menu on the Parallels Desktop menu bar while Windows is running..
