The virtual hard disk failed to resize.

  • Parallels Desktop for Mac Home Edition
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro Edition

Resize of virtual hard disk fails with the following error:

Cannot resize the file system.
The last partition on this virtual hard disk cannot be resized.

The issue might occur on virtual machine with Linux OS installed if one of the following conditions is true:

  1. Swap partition is last in the list of partitions.
  2. Linux VM is last in the list of partitions.

The solution is to keep the Resize file system option unchecked when you resize a virtual hard disk with the EXT3 file system, and then extend existing partitions using native Linux tools.

For example you can use GParted, which can be downloaded here.
