Installing Windows XP Upgrade Version

  • Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 3 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 2.x for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop for Windows & Linux

  1. Make a new Virtual Machine (VM).
  2. Boot the VM from your Windows XP Upgrade disk.
  3. Setup will load and eventually ask you to insert your CD with previous Windows version.
  4. Since the CD doesn’t appear on the Mac desktop while Parallels is running you cannot simply replace the CD. You can eject and insert another Windows CD with this work around:
  5. Switch mouse and keyboard back to OS X (ctrl-alt).
  6. In the Parallels "Devices" menu (on the top bar of your Mac desktop) choose "CD/DVD-ROM 1" and then choose "Disconnect". This releases the CD to the OS X. It takes a moment or two to show up on the Mac desktop.
  7. Eject the Win XP CD.
  8. Insert the CD with previous Windows version.
  9. In the Parallels "Devices" menu choose "CD/DVD-ROM 1" and then choose "Connect". This attaches the CD to the VM.
  10. Switch mouse and keyboard back to VM by clicking in the VM window.
  11. In the Windows XP Setup window press ENTER and the XP install program will check the CD you've inserted. Eventually it will ask for the Windows XP Install CD so repeat the steps 5-9 to switch the disks again.
  12. Now Windows XP should install fine.
