  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition

The following error appears upon the attempt to start virtual machine:

Unable to start virtual machine because one or more kernel components are for another version of Parallels Desktop

The issue was caused by incorrect root ( / ) permissions.

  1. Open Finder > Application > Terminal application check the root ( / ) permissions:

    # ls -ld /

The correct permission should be root:admin.

To change the permissions execute the following command:

    # sudo chown root:admin /
  2. Repair disk permissions on your Mac.

Go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. On the left side of the window choose Macintosh HD. On the right side go to "First aid" tab and press "Repair Disk Permissions" button.

  3. Reboot Mac, check root ( / ) permissions.

If the permissions are set incorrectly once again perform the following:

  1. Run sudo chown root:admin / once again.

  2. Then open Finder > right click Macintosh HD > Get info > expand Sharing & Permissions > added your user and granted Read&Write permissions.

  3. Reboot Mac and make sure that correct permissions remain.
