Microsoft provides a way to move your files and settings from Windows XP virtual machine to your new Windows 8 and 8.1 virtual machine using a free data transfer program - LapLink PCmover Express for Windows XP.

Note: If you want to transfer your applications from your Windows XP virtual machine to your new Windows 8 or 8.1 virtual machine you may consider using paid third-party programs, such as PCmover Professional.

Before you begin

  1. We recommend that both your Windows XP and Windows 8 (8.1) virtual machines are using the Shared Networking mode:

    • Go to your virtual machines' Configuration -> Hardware -> Network
    • Choose Shared Network from the Type drop-down list
  2. We recommend reducing the Memory allocated for your Windows XP virtual machine to 256 Mb to decrease the memory pressure on your Mac. This is especially important on the Macs with less than 8 Gb of RAM installed.
