Coherence view mode is blocked by HIPS feature in version 5 of an ESET security product

  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Standard Edition

Sometimes when I try to switch to Coherence view mode, nothing happens.
Other times, it leads to strange behavior of the Parallels Desktop application or its virtual machine.

If you have recently upgraded your ESET security product to version 5, the new HIPS feature, which version 5 introduced, may be blocking some Parallels Desktop features.

Tip: Host-based Intrusion Prevention (HIPS) is an installed software package which monitors your host for suspicious activity by analyzing events occurring within your host.

In order to use both version 5 of an ESET security product and Parallels Desktop, please disable the HIPS feature in your ESET security product:
  1. Open the ESET application
  2. Click Setup
  3. Under the Computer section on the right, click the word 'Enabled' next to HIPS
  4. Uncheck the 'Enable HIPS' check-box and click OK
  5. Restart the virtual machine
All Parallels Desktop features should now be working correctly and you are equally protected against viruses and similar activity as if you had version 4 of an ESET security product.
