The application stays open after logging off or disconnecting the session.

Cause

Incorrect group policy (GPO) settings.

Resolution

There are some required GPOs to ensure everything is behaving as expected. If applications are staying open after logging off or disconnecting, set the RDS disconnect and log off time settings on the RDS servers with the following GPOs:

Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Sessions Host > Session Time Limits:

Set time limit for disconnected sessions: End a disconnected session in 1 minutes
Set time limit for log off of RemoteApp sessions: RemoteApp session log off delay: Immediately
