Symptoms

A virtual machine was previously migrated from Microsoft Virtual PC.  After the upgrade from Parallels Desktop 3 to 4 version virtual machine upgrade fails on 4th stage. Parallels Tools installation fails. Mouse stops working.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, please do the following:

1. Grab input of you virtual machine by clicking in the guest window
2. Press Apple button. Navigate with Up/Down arrows to highligt "Run..." . Hit Return (Enter) button.
Type explorer.exe to launch Windows Explorer and select "My Computer".
3. Press OPTION(ALT) and then using your arrows select "Properties" item





4. In "System Properties" navigate to the "Hardware" tab and using TAB key select "Device Manager" button
5. Press SPACE button to open "Device Manager"




6. In "Device Manager" navigate to the item "VM Additions PS/2 Port Mouse"
7. Press OPTION(ALT) button to popup Actions menu and select "Update Driver"
NOTE: You may need to press TAB multiple time first, to select devices list





8. In the "Hardware Upgrade Wizard" navigate using your TAB and SPACE keys
select "No, not this time on the first screen" and choose "Next"





9. On the next screen select "Advanced" and choose "Next".




10. Select "Don't search" and choose "Next"




11. Select "Microsoft PS/2 Mouse" in the devices list and choose "Next"



12. Answer "Yes" on the confirmation



13. Click "Finish" to complete the "Hardware Update Wizard"




14. Using OPTION(ALT)+F4 close all your open Windows and get to the "Turn off computer"
dialog, select "Restart" and press ENTER.




15. After Restart your mouse will start working and you will be able to install Parallels Tools
using the "Install Parallels Tools" menu item.
