Slow virtual machine performance when running from external USB 3 SSD (Samsung T1)

Symptoms

  • Virtual machine performance is slow.
  • Task Manager shows 100% usage in a Disk tab.

Cause

The issue is specific to the ExFAT driver implementation and its interactions with USB hardware.

Resolution

Format the SSD drive to the Mac OS X Extended file system (HFS+):

Note:Verify, that any data on the drive was backed up, as formatting will erase all data on the drive.

  1. Open Disk Utility and select the connected external drive.
  2. Go to Erase menu.

  3. Select OS X Extended (Journaled) file system from the Format dropdown menu.

  4. Click Erase.
