The Parallels Virtual Automation product is represented by two separate modules:

PVA Agent - software which installs directly on the server with virtualization (Parallels Server 4 Bare Metal, Parallels Server 5 Bare Metal, Parallels Server 4 for Mac, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, and Parallels Server 4 for Mac Bare Metal Edition) and provides backup\restore, XML API, SOAP API, and offline management functionality. 

PVA Management Node - software which is installed on a separate host without any virtualization inside (which can be a container or virtual machine on any virtual server, but not necessarily) and provides a centralized point of virtualization servers management via a web interface called PVA Control Center, which is available over the HTTPS on port 4648 of the PVA Management Node.

PVA Management Node (PVA MN) manages virtualization servers with PVA Agent installed via XML API. In order to be able to manage a server with a PVA Agent via PVA MN, it is necessary to register the server in the PVA Control Center first, whereas the PVA Agent by default is installed on virtualization server along with virtualization software like Parallels Server or Parallels Virtuozzo Containers.
