Cannot install driver for network adapter in Windows XP after upgrade to Parallels Desktop 6

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac

Symptoms

After upgrading to Parallels Desktop 6, there is no internet connection in Windows XP. The driver for the network adapter cannot be installed even if Parallels Tools are installed.

Cause

Most likely, your virtual machine is running Windows XP but is configured as Windows Vista or Windows 7. This causes different network adapter types for your virtual machine to be emulated and the driver will not install.

Resolution

To resolve this issue please do the following:

1. Open virtual machine configuration and change the OS type for your virtual machine to the correct one - Windows XP

2. Switch to Hardware tab and in Boot order section insert the following string under boot flags:

devices.net.force_adapter_type=rtl

3. Click OK to save and close configuration. Then, start the virtual machine and install the network adapter (if it is not installing automatically)
