Upgrade from Parallels Desktop 2 or 3 to Parallels Desktop 6 or 7 for Mac

Symptoms

You have decided to upgrade your Parallels Desktop 2 or 3 to Parallels Desktop 6 or 7 for Mac.

Resolution

As a first step, we strongly recommend that you read this article to learn how to get a special  license for Parallels Desktop 6 or 7 for Mac when upgrading from version 2 or 3.

Then, please follow these steps:

1. Make a backup of your virtual machine. Your virtual machine files are located in your Home folder/ Documents/ Parallels/ VM folder by default (it also might be in your Home folder/ Library/ Parallels/ VMfolder, if the virtual machine was created under build 1970 or earlier). To backup your virtual machine, please copy this VM folder to a safe place or external hard drive.

2. Start your virtual machine and go to Start --> Control Panel -->Add or Remove Programs and remove Parallels Tools.

NOTE: We recommend that you uninstall your current anti-virus protection temporarily;you can re-install it as soon as the upgrade is completed.

3.
Download and install Parallels Desktop 6 or 7 for Mac.

4. Start your virtual machine and wait for it to convert to the new format.
