Functional Keys Do Not Act as Expected in the Guest Operating System

  • Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac Standard Edition

In the guest operating system, functional keys and shortcuts including functional keys do not act as expected, e.g. Alt+F4 opens Dashboard in Mac OS X.

To solve this problem:

1. In Mac OS X, open System Preferences.
2. Click Keyboard&Mouse (Keyboard in Snow Leopard) > Keyboard.
3. In the Keyboard tab, select Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.

If you leave this option disabled, functional keys will call specific actions (e.g. open Expose, Spaces, Dashboard, etc). To use a functional key as usual, hold Fn and press the desired functional key. For example, to close a window in the Windows guest OS, click inside the virtual machine window to capture the keyboard and mouse input, and press Fn+Alt+F4.
