  • Parallels Desktop 2.x for Mac

Symptoms

You try to migrate existing Windows XP or Windows Vista installation to be used in virtual machine and receive error messages about failed migration or there are no files in output directory after migration has been completed.

Cause

Possible reasons of failures are:

- high level of files' fragmentation
- missing files

Resolution

1. Uninstall Parallels Transporter from Add or Remove Programs list on Windows side (called Programs list in Windows Vista)
2. Restart Windows
3. Run Chkdsk utility on source Windows computer:

Right-click C: drive in My Computer > Properties > Tools tab > click Check Now... button, select 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' checkboxes and
press Start.
After it you should restart Windows. Windows will check file system at startup.

4. After Windows restart, install Parallels Transporter
5. Restart Windows again.

Try to run Parallels Transporter, select Advanced option, Bootable disk (recommended) option, and under More Options set the output files to be saved locally or on an external HDD drive. Make sure external HDD has file system different from FAT32 (FAT32 has maximum file size limitation of 4 GB).
