Installation of Windows XP operating system hangs at about 33 minutes left

Symptoms

You are attempting to install Microsoft Windows operating system in a virtual machine  but it hangs during the "Installing Devices" phase at "Setup will complete in approximately 33 minutes".

Resolution

For Parallels Desktop versions 2 and 3:

Change the acceleration mode of the VM:

1. Launch Parallels Desktop but do not start the virtual machine (VM)
2. Click on any device in the list to open the VM configuration page.
3. In the Resources list select Options.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Set the Acceleration level to Normal or Disabled.

After installing Windows XP in the VM, you should change the Acceleration level back to High.

For Parallels Desktop version 4 and later:


Increase amount of CPUs assigned to the VM:

1. Launch Parallels Desktop but do not start the virtual machine (VM)
2. Click Configure to open the VM configuration page.
3. In the Hardware list select CPU.
4. Set the CPU number to 2 or more.

After installing Windows XP in the VM, you can change CPU amount back to 1 if you like.
