Error 17530 trying to install Parallels Desktop

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac Home Edition

Symptoms

If you have Stuffit Expander installed you may get an error while installing Parallels Desktop 4.0:

" An error occurred attempting to expand /Volumes/Parallels Desktop/Install.mpkg A folder was specified when a file was required (Error #17530)"

Cause

This error is well know when you install any .pkg or .mpkg application using Stuffit Expander (it may occur even if you install Mac OS X updates) as .pkg and .mpkg  files should be installed only with Apple MacOS X Installer application.

Resolution

1. Launch the Installer.app from  /System/Library/CoreServices/

2. Install.mpkg in Parallels Desktop DMG file is hidden so you need to enable hidden files. To do it please open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal), copy and Paste the following command:

 defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

Hit Return.

3. To make the command take effect, you need to restart the Finder: hold down the Option key, then click and hold on the Finder icon in the Dock. When the contextual menu appears, select Relaunch and the Finder will restart.

4. Click File -> Open in the Installer window and browse for Parallels Desktop DMG file mounted in Finder on the left panel (red Parallels Desktop disk icon). Click on Install.mpkg. Now Paralles Desktop should install properly.

5. Since you do not need to show hidden files anymore, please copy and paste the following command in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

Hit return and relaunch Finder once again.
