Virtual Machine does not boot the guest OS after using the Recreate option when configuring the VM's hard disk

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 3 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 2.x for Mac Standard Edition

Symptoms

Virtual Machine fails to boot from the hard disk drive when it starts.

Cause

Recreate HDD option doesn't just resize the VM hard disk, but, as the warning message states, completely replaces the VM hard disk with a new virtual hard disk of the size specified by the user. All data from the previous VM hard disk, including Windows installation, is erased after using the Recreate option.

Resolution

Unfortunately there are no way to restore the lost data, you need to reinstall the guest OS from scratch.
