Installing Windows OS from Disk Image File Using Mac OS X Disk Utility. Problems During Windows Installation. Installation from the Disk Fails.

Desired Result:

To Install Windows to the VM using CD/DVD file image.

Required Steps:

  1. Insert the Windows OS installation disc into the CD/DVD-ROM drive of your computer.
  2. Start the Disk Utility (Applications\Utilities\Disk Utility).
  3. Select the second CD Icon ("Untitled 0") in the Disk Utility devices list.
  4. Click the New Image button on the top of the Disk Utility window.
  5. Type the name into the Save as box (i.e. WinXP).
  6. Change location to Desktop in the Where box.
  7. Change Image Format to read-only.
  8. Leave encryption as none.
  9. Click the Save button.
  10. The image creation will start. This should take a few minutes to finish.
  11. When the image creation is complete you can close the Disk Utility.
  12. Ctrl+Click on saved image and select Get Info
  13. Change extension from dmg to iso
  14. Click "Use .iso" when suggested to select extension
  15. Now you should be able to connect this image to the Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine.
  16. Start Parallels with the icon in Applications/Parallels.
  17. The OS installation wizard will automatically start. (if it does not then you can activate it by selecting New under the File menu in the menubar.)
  18. Choose the Typical install option .
  19. Select the OS.
  20. Choose the name.
  21. Select option for more productive virtual machine.
  22. In the next window, select More options.
  23. For source select ISO image, then use the Choose button and navigate to the .dmg file (Macintosh HD/Users/[your user name]/Desktop/WinXP.ISO ) and then click the Open button.
  24. Click Finish.
  25. Windows should start to install.
  26. Install Windows normally, using the default settings.
  27. After Windows is installed you will need to install Parallels Tools.
  28. After installation, with Windows open and logged in, click the Actions menu on the top of your screen and select Install Parallels Tools (you may need to press ctrl+alt to release the mouse from Windows).
  29. A dropdown window will appear, click OK.
  30. There will be a short pause and then the Parallels Tools setup wizard will appear; click Next.
  31. Select Complete install and then click Next.
  32. Click Install on the next window.
  33. A warning message will appear. Select OK.
  34. After the tools install click Restart.
Troubleshooting:
If image creation fails on step 7-8, you should consider that there are some problems with Mac reading your installation media. Try cleaning the disk with soft cloth, if it doesn't help - get another installation disc. Consult with the Apple Customer Service if the image creation fails even with the new disc as there may be some problems with Mac CD/DVD drive.
If Windows won't install at step 18-19 make sure that you have genuine Microsoft Windows installation disc and it's bootable.
