How to enable Secure Boot in UEFI based virtual machines?

Symptoms

I created a UEFI based virtual machine and now I am unable to complete Windows installation. It fails with Secure Boot State is Disabled error message.

Cause

Secure Boot option is disabled.

Resolution

To enable Secure Boot option, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Shut down the virtual machine (Actions > Shut down).

  2. Open its configuration > locate Hardware > Boot Order > open Advanced Settings tab > in Boot flags field type in the command below:

        vm.efi.secureboot = 1
    
  3. Close the configuration window and start the virtual machine.
