Parallels Tools installation fails at 20% after installing Parallels Desktop latest build

Symptoms

After Parallels Desktop latest update the Parallels Tools installation fails at 20% even after following instructions from the article.

Cause

prl_boot process is hung.

Resolution

NOTE: Please take a snapshot of your virtual machine (in the Mac menu bar go to Actions > Take snapshot) before you proceed with the instruction below to be able to revert all the changes.

  1. Open Windows registry editor:

    Press Command+R combination on the keyboard.

    In the newly appeared window type regedit and hit Enter.

    Then prompted by UAC click Yes button.

  2. Navigate to the registry entry mentioned below:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\prl_boot

  3. Click on prl_boot key in the left side of the window and press delete on the keyboard.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the operation.
  5. Restart the virtual machine from the Start menu.

    NOTE: Don't Shutdown and then Start the virtual machine. It's very important to restart virtual machine from the Restart option.

  6. Install Parallels Tools.
