After extending partition file system displays wrong disk size in Windows

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac Home Edition
  • Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro Edition

Symptoms

I extended the Hard disk size in virtual machine settings but when I'm checking the disk size in the Windows Explorer the size is incorrect. The old size is still showing.

Cause

The file system wasn't extended properly.

Resolution

Extend the file system using Command Prompt:

  1. Start the virtual machine and press CMD+R.
  2. Type cmd and hit Return/Enter.
  3. In the Command Prompt execute the following commands one-by-one:

    diskpart
    list volume

  4. Find the number of the volume which has the wrong size and execute the following commands one after another (x is the number of the volume):

    select volume x
    extend filesystem

    alttext

  5. Restart the virtual machine and check the issue.
