How to analyse Windows crash dump

  • How to I analyze Windows crash dump of Parallels virtual machine?

Collect a dump

  1. Open virtual machine configuration window -> Hardware -> Boot Order -> set this bootflag:

    kernel.generate_mem_dump=1

  2. Launch the virtual machine and reproduce the crash. Enter virtual machine contents (inside *.pvm) and locate memory.dmp.

  3. Transfer memory.dmp to Windows workstation (or another virtual machine).
  4. Download and install Debugging Tools for Windows
  5. Open WinDbg -> File -> Open Crash Dump
  6. Load symbols:

    kd> .sympath SRV*c:\websymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

    kd> .reload

    kd> !analyze -v

  7. Do a research on bugcheck analysis.

NOTE: To see call stack: kd> kL

To see call stack without addresses: kd> kc

To view loaded modules: kd> lm
