Unable to resize VM hard disk with "failed to execute the operation " error

Symptoms

An error occurred when trying to resize the Virtual Machine Hard drive:

    "Operation failed. Failed to execute the operation. Problem ID : 9"

Cause

Corrupted Windows filesystem.

Resolution

NOTE: Before performing the instruction we highly recommend to back your virtual machine.

  1. Start virtual machine.

  2. Go to Start -> in the search box type cmd -> right-click on the appeared Command Prompt app > Open as Administrator

  3. In the application type chkdsk /r /f and hit Enter (return). The command will suggest checking after the next reboot: type y and hit Enter (return).

  4. Restart your Virtual machine normally and proceed with disk checking.

  5. Shut down virtual machine and try to increase the disk space.

    If the issue still persists:

  6. Open command prompt and execute the following:

    DISKPART
    DISKPART> List Volume
    DISKPART> select volume # (this is the number of the volume listed by the above ‘List Volume’ command; You should choose the physical volume you want to expand)
    DISKPART> extend filesystem
    DISKPART> exit
    
  7. Reboot virtual machine and check the issue.
