Windows Explorer hangs and crashes

Symptoms

Windows Explorer hangs and crashes.

Cause

  • Windows Updates conflict
  • Apple Program/App installed in Windows virtual machine

Resolution

  1. Remove all the Apple applications from Windows VM.

  2. Change 3D Acceleration from: Virtual Machine Menu -> Configure -> Hardware -> Video -> 3D Acceleration -> change DirectX10 to DirectX9.

  3. Re-register the Shell's Registry Entries:

    Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator.

    Type (or copy and paste by right clicking in the Command Prompt window and choosing Paste) the following command and hit Enter (return):

    regsvr32 /i shell32
    
  4. Delete Folder Settings:

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator.

Type (or copy and paste by right clicking in the Command Prompt window and choosing Paste) the following commands one by one and hit Enter (return) after each command:

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell" /f

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams" /f

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2" /f
