What user account permissions are required to install Parallels Tools?

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac Standard Edition

Symptoms

What user account permissions are required to install Parallels Tools?

Resolution

There are 3 ways to install (update) Parallels Tools in the virtual machine:

  1. Parallels Tools automatic installation (update) - when Parallels Desktop detects that Parallels Tools are not installed (are out-of-date) and automatically launches installation (update).

  2. Parallels Tools automatic installation (update) - when installing (updating) Parallels Tools using virtual machine menu bar (Actions > Install (Update) Parallels Tools).

These two ways do not require a user account to have local administrator privileges. That means that a regular local/domain user can install Parallels Tools using these two ways.

  3. Parallels Tools manual installation (update) - when connecting Parallels Tools .iso image to the virtual CD/DVD drive and running Parallels Tools installation (update) from the Windows File Explorer manually.

This way requires a user account to have local computer administrator privileges. That means that a regular local/domain user cannnot install Parallels Tools using this way.
