How to create an installation image file for Mac OS 10.5-10.8?

From DVD

  1. Mount your installation DVD to your Mac.
  2. Open Terminal.
  3. Execute the command:

          diskutil list
    
  4. As result you will see the list of your partitions. Please locate the installation partition (you may verify it by name or by the size).

  5. Execute the command:

        sudo dd if=/dev/disk_name of=mydisk.cdr bs=2048
    

    Note: You will have to enter your password. As you won't see it, just type it and press Enter\Return.

    Where disk_name is the name of an appropriate partition (disk1, disk2, etc.).

  6. Wait till the process will be completed.

    Example output:

    alttext

From USB

To create an image file from USB the command should be:

    sudo dd if=/dev/disk_name of=mydisk.cdr
