Unable to access Internet on Windows virtual machine

Symptoms

  • There is a yellow exclamation mark on the network icon in Windows:

  • When I ping any website e.g. google.com in Command Prompt, I receive the following error message:

Ping request could not find host [site]. Please check the name and try again

  • In System Properties (Start button > Right-click Computer > Properties) some of the options are not available:

Cause

DNS client is not configured inside the Windows virtual machine.

Resolution

It is required to reset network settings to the default ones, follow the instructions below:

  1. In Parallels Desktop top bar go to Actions -> Take a snapshot.
  2. Download the registry fix in Windows for the configuring the TCP/IP Settings of a Network Adapter.
  3. Double-click on it and apply settings. It will show the warning

    click Yes.

  4. Restart Windows virtual machine.
  5. Open Command Prompt: click on Start button and in the Search box type cmd > right click > Run as Administrator > and hit Enter.
  6. Execute the following command to reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:

    netsh winsock reset catalog
    
  7. Execute the following command to reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    
  8. Restart Windows virtual machine.
