Unable to view Language bar in Windows Taskbar.

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac Home Edition

Symptoms

  • Unable to view Language icon in Windows Taskbar
  • Unable to switch between keyboard layouts

Cause

ctfmon.exe (C:Windows/System32) process is not running.

Ctfmon is the Microsoft process that controls Alternative User Input and the Office Language bar. It’s how you can control the computer via speech or a pen tablet, or using the onscreen keyboard inputs for asian languages.

Resolution

  1. Go to Registry editor by typing ‘regedit’ in Run or search box. Go to the following location,

    alttext

  2. Right Click on blank space on right side, select New String Value.

    alttext

  3. Again right click on the newly created value and select modify, then type as shown below.

     “ctfmon”=”CTFMON.EXE”

    alttext

  4. Press OK and restart virtual machine. Now will get back the missing language bar in Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, 8.1.

NOTE: This issue is out of Parallels Technical Support scope. In case you still unable to view language bar please contact Microsoft Support directly.
