FileVault does not work in OS X Maverics virtual machines

Symptoms

I cannot turn on FileVault in OS X Maverics virtual machine

Cause

OS X Maverics virtual machine installed from "Install OS X Maverics.app" file does not have Recovery partition.

Resolution

  1. Start OS X Maverics virtual machine.
  2. Copy "Install OS X Maverics.app" from your Mac Applications folder into your OS X Maverics virtual machine or download "Install OS X Maverics.app" file from Apple Store inside your OS X Maverics virtual machine.
  3. Run "Install OS X Maverics.app" inside your OS X Maverics virtual machine.
  4. Once OS X Maverics is reinstalled inside your virtual machine, try to enable FileVault.
