Symptoms

Num lock does not save its state after reboot in Windows 8/8.1 After reboot numpad is not working and you should enable it again.

Cause

Incorrect Windows 8/8.1 Num lock detection when fast boot option is enabled.

Resolution

  1. Start your virtual machine. Wait for login screen. Do not log in.
  2. Enable Numlock in Mac menu bar: Devices > Keyboard > Numlock.
  3. Check that it works in password field if you have it and shut VM down.
  4. Start VM and log in normally.

  1. Start your virtual machine and log in.
  2. Enable Numlock in Mac menu bar: Devices > Keyboard > Numlock.
  3. Make sure that it works.
  4. Go to Start menu, type cmd, right-click on Command Prompt in search and choose Run as Administrator.
  5. Execute the following command in Command Prompt:

    shutdown -s -t 00
    
  6. Start virtual machine normally.
