Virtual Machine Crashes Soon After Start

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac

Symptoms

My virtual machine crashes soon after start.

Cause

Third party audio drivers incompatibility with Parallels Desktop

Resolution

  1. Check what audio drivers are installed on your Mac

Open Terminal and execute the followwing command:

        ls /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/

The standard output should look like this:

        AirPlay.driver
        iSightAudio.driver
        AppleAVBAudio.driver
        BluetoothAudioPlugIn.driver

Any other driver (file) listed in that directory can be a reason of a crash.

Several third party drivers that are known to cause the crash are listed below:

    • "RazerAudio.plugin"
    • "Hear.plugin"
    • "SoundBunny.plugin"
    • "Avid CoreAudio.plugin"
    • "Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin"
  2. Uninstall third party audio driver that caused the crash

Note: This step should be taken if only any of the third party drivers listed in step 1 are found in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/ folder.

    • For "RazerAudio.plugin" - Use the "Uninstall Razer Synapse" app located in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

    • For "Hear.plugin" - Use the Hear application's menu to uninstall the driver.

    • For "SoundBunny.plugin" Use the SoundBunny application's menu to uninstall the driver.

    • For "Avid CoreAudio.plugin" and "Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin" - remove the "plugin" files from /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/ folder.
  3. Alternatively you can delete the audio device from your virtual machine's Configuration:

    • Start Parallels Desktop but do not launch your virtual machine
    • Open your virtual machine's Configuration -> Hardware
    • Select the Sound device in the list and use "-" button to delete the device.
