Windows XP virtual machine slow performance. svchost.exe consumes 100% of CPU in Windows Task Manager

Symptoms

  • Windows XP virtual machine performance is decreased

  • In the Windows XP Task Manager svchost.exe process takes 100% of CPU

Cause

Workaround

  1. Shutdown Windows XP virtual machine. Go to virtual machine configuration window and set 2 vCPUs

  2. Download and install Internet Explorer 8

    NOTE: Please check the file name: IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe. Also, please disable 'Install Updates' option before the installation.

  3. Once Internet Explorer 8 is installed, please reboot and download the following Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP:

  4. Install the updates one by one. Note that you don't have to reboot Windows XP after each install, only once after all three updates are installed.

  5. Now please check overall Windows XP performance. Also you may enter Windows Update and install all pending Windows updates now.
