How to install OS X 10.9 Mavericks in a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 9

This article will guide you through the process of installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks to a virtual environment.

There are two ways to install Mavericks OS into a virtual machine:

  1. Using Recovery Partition on an OS X Mavericks host.
  2. Using "Install OS X Mavericks.app" downloaded from the AppStore.

(Recommended setup: 4 GB of RAM or more on host computer)

INSTALLING OS X MAVERICKS USING RECOVERY PARTITION

Note: In order to install OS X Mavericks in a virtual machine, Mavericks must be installed as a host OS and your Mac must be connected to the Internet.

Installation procedure:

  1. Start Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac.
  2. Go to Parallels Desktop menu bar -> File -> New...

  3. In Parallels Wizard choose "Install OS X Mavericks Using the Recovery Partition", then click Continue.

  4. Select your language and choose "Reinstall OS X".

  5. Wait untill installation is completed.

  6. Install Parallels tools in the virtual machine using Virtual Machine -> Install Parallels Tools... menu.


INSTALLING OS X MAVERICKS USING "INSTALL OS X MAVERICKS.APP"

  1. Start Parallels Desktop.
  2. Go to Parallels Desktop menu bar -> File -> New...

  3. Click on "Install Windows or another OS from a DVD or image file", then click Continue.

  4. Check to see if the OS X installation image was automatically detected by the Wizard. If so, click Continue.

    If the OS X installation image was not automatically detected:

    • Open Finder and navigate to the Applications folder.
    • Locate the "Install OS X Mavericks" application.
    • In Parallels Wizard click "Locate manually", then click "Image file".

    • Drag and drop the "Install OS X Mavericks" app into the Parallels Wizard.

    • The installation image will be detected. Press Continue.

    • A dialog box asking to create the bootable image will appear. Click Continue.

    • Name the resulting image file and its location, and click Save.

    • Wait untill the disk is created. This may take some time.

    • Once the bootable image is created, click Continue.
    • If the мirtual machine unexpectedly shuts down, restart it to begin the OS X Mavericks installation.
  5. Continue with the OS X Mavericks installation.
  6. Once the OS X is installed, install Parallels Tools.
