RESOLUTION

Reason:

After you install a MSExchange (Exchange2007Mailstore service) service on the Exchange Back-end (Mailbox) server, you may need to register additional resources such as Mailbox store in the POA system. It may be required before providing the service to resellers or customers for provisioning of their mailboxes.

Solution:

Exchange 2003

This section describes how to create a Mailbox Store in an existing First Storage Group on Exchange 2003:

  1. Log on to Exchange Back-end server (ex. EXBE01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrators group.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  3. In the console tree, expand Administrative Groups, expand First Administrative Group, expand Servers, then expand EXBE01, and then expand First Storage Group.
  4. Right-click First Storage Group, click New, and then click Mailbox Store.
  5. Type name of new store (ex. MBS01), and then click OK
  6. Under First Storage Group, right-click MBS01, and then click Mount Store.

In the Exchange 2003 Enterprise version only five stores of any type (Public Folder and Mailbox stores) may be added to Storage group. Therefore when at the adding Mailbox store in Exchange make sure you do not exceed this limit in the Storage groups. If necessary create one more Storage group but no more then four per once Exchange Back-end server. The following section describes how to create additional Storage group:

  1. In the Exchange System Manager console tree, expand Administrative Groups, expand First Administrative Group, expand Servers, then expand EXBE01,
  2. Right-click EXBE01, click New, and then click Storage group.
  3. Type name of new Storage group (ex. STG02), and then click OK.

In the Exchange 2003 Enterprise server only four Storage groups may be created.

Exchange 2007

Each Storage Group in Exchange 2007 can contain up to five databases but it is strongly recommended to place each new database in its own storage group until the maximum number of storage groups is reached. The standard license for Exchange 2007 enables to create up to a five storage groups and to mount up to five databases. The enterprise license for Exchange 2007 enables to create up to 50 storage groups and mount up to 50 databases.

Therefore before creating new Mailbox Database, new Storage Group should be created. The following section describes how to create additional Storage group:

  1. Log on to Exchange Mailbox server (ex. EXMBX01) using an account that is a member of the domain administrators group.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, and then click Exchange Management Console.
  3. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration, and then click Mailbox.
  4. In the result pane, select the server on which you want to create a new storage group.
  5. In the action pane, click New storage group. The New Storage Group wizard appears.
  6. On the New StorageGroup page, complete the following fields:
    • Storage group name – Use this box to type the name of the new storage group.
    • Log files path – This box shows where the new storage group log files will be placed. To change the location of the log files for the new storage group, click Browse, and then select a new location.
    • System files path – This box shows where the new storage group system files will be placed. To change the location of the system files for the new storage group, click Browse, and then select a new location.
  7. Click New to create the storage group.
  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new storage group was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.
  9. Click Finish to complete the New Storage Group wizard. The new storage group appears in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console

This section describes how to create a Mailbox Database in storage group created on previous step:

  4. In the result pane, select the mailbox server and then, in the work pane, select the storage group in which you want the new mailbox database to be created.
  5. In the action pane, click New Mailbox Database. The New Mailbox Database wizard appears.
  6. On the New Mailbox Database page, complete the following fields:
    • Mailbox database name – Use this box to type the name of the new mailbox database.
    • Database file path – This box shows where the new mailbox database will be created. To change the location of the Exchange database (.edb) file for the new mailbox database, click Browse, and then select a new location.
    • Mount this database – Select this check box to mount the mailbox database immediately after it is created. Mounting a database puts it online and making its data available to users.
  7. Click New to create the mailbox database.
  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the new mailbox database was created successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.
  9. Click Finish to complete the New Mailbox Database wizard. The new mailbox database appears under its storage group in the work pane of the Exchange Management Console.
