Windows 8.1 crashes during installation or upgrade

Symptoms

Windows Virtual machine may accidentally crash while installing or upgrading to Windows 8.1

Error message:

    The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.  
    Windows installation cannot proceed.  
    To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.

Resolution

  1. Stop your Virtual machine
  2. Go to Virtual Machines menu -> Configure

  3. Switch to Hardware Tab

  4. Select USB and Bluetooth and use button to delete this device from Virtual Machine's Configuration

  5. Restart your Virtual Machine and proceed with Windows 8.1 upgrade or installation

  6. Once Windows 8.1 is installed shut it down and open Virtual Machine's Configuration as per step 2
  7. Switch to Hardware tab and use button to add USB and Bluetooth device to your Virtual Machine



If the issue still persists:

  1. Delete the current Windows 8.1 Virtual machine with unsuccessful installation
  2. Start creating the new Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine according to KB 4729
  3. On step 6 "Specify a name and location" check the "Customize settings before installation" check-box.
  4. In your Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine Configuration pane Switch to Hardware Tab
  5. Select USB and Bluetooth and use button to delete this device from Virtual Machine's Configuration

  6. Proceed with Windows 8.1 installation

  7. Once Windows 8.1 is installed shut it down and open Virtual Machine's Configuration
  8. Switch to Hardware tab and use button to add USB and Bluetooth device to your Virtual Machine
