Parallels Tools update hangs at 27% in Windows virtual machine

Symptoms

Parallels Tools update hangs at 27% in Windows virtual machine after updating Parallels Desktop to a new build.

Resolution

In order to overcome this issue you need to follow the steps below:

  • Shut down the virtual machine;

  • Go to Virtual Machine menu → ConfigureHardwarePrint → and disable 'Add all Mac printers'; Screenshot

  • Start the virtual machine;

  • Wait until Parallels Tools update starts;

In case automatic update does not start, go to Virtual Machine menu and choose 'Reinstall Parallels Tools' option.

If the above solution does not help please follow the steps below:

  1. Start Windows and wait till it is fully loaded. Stop Parallels Tools update if it starts automatically

  2. Right-click on Windows task bar and choose "Task Manager"

  3. In Task Manager switch to Process tab and press "Show processes from all Users" button

  4. Locate spoolsv.exe process and stop it using End Process button

  5. Go to Virtual Machine menu and choose Update Parallels Tools

If the issue still persists:

  1. Start Windows and wait till it is fully loaded. Stop Parallels Tools update if it starts automatically

  2. Go to Start ► Computer. In path field type in "%systemroot%\system32\"

  3. locate printui.dll file and rename it (ex.: printui_1.dll)

  4. Go to Virtual Machine menu and choose Update Parallels Tools
