Unable to assign any key combination on Mac side to CTRL+BREAK on Windows side

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

My Mac keyboard does not have a BREAK key, but I need CTRL+BREAK key in my Windows virtual machine.

In Parallels Desktop menu, when I go to Preferences → Keyboard and try to create an assignment, there is no option to assign something to CTRL+BREAK on Windows side.

CAUSE

Assigning key combinations to CTRL+BREAK is not supported by Parallels Desktop.

RESOLUTION

This issue has not been fixed yet.  If you wish to receive a notifcation when the solution becomes available please subscribe to this Knowledge Base article (see links below).

WORKAROUND #1

CTRL+BREAK will work when used from Parallels Desktop status bar.

WORKAROUND #2

  1. Stop your virtual machine
  2. Make sure there is a USB Controller device in your virtual machine Configuration → Hardware tab. Createitifnecessary;
  3. Go to the virtual machine Configuration  Hardware tab and click on Boot Order in the list on the left. In the Boot flags: field add the following string:

devices.usb.enable_keyboard=2;

 That will enable a virtual USB keyboard in your VM which does not distinguish between BREAK and PAUSE keys. Now you may assign some combination to CTRL+PAUSE and it will be triggering CTRL+BREAK inside the virtual machine.

WORKAROUND #3

Purchase a PC keyboard with a BREAK key.
