Do not backup with Time Machine option does not work

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition

Symptoms

After upgrading to Parallels Desktop 7, it is not possible to include a Virtual Machine image to the files backed up by Time Machine archives.

Do not backup with Time Machine option in the Virtual Machine configuration remains checked despite its previous adjustment.

Cause

Do not backup with Time Machine option in the Virtual Machine configuration remains checked despite its previous adjustment.

Resolution

Launch Terminal application on Mac from Mac HD/Applications/Utilities

Use the command:

sudo tmutil removeexclusion -p

like in the example below to override Do not backup with Time Machine Virtual Machine configuration option and include its image into the archive produced by Time Machine:

sudo tmutil removeexclusion -p "/Users/John/Documents/Parallels/Windows Vista.pvm"

where the Virtual Machine name is Windows Vista, and it is used by user John. Note, running sudo command may require you to enter your Mac password.

Note: if the issue still persists, most probably, the virtual machine configuration fails to be updated properly. Please re-create virtual machine and transfer the existing hard drive as described in this article. After it is done, repeat the steps from the current article.

To perform the opposite action and exclude Virtual Machine from the Time Machine archive use the following command:

sudo tmutil addexclusion -p "/Users/John/Documents/Parallels/Windows Vista.pvm"
