ERROR: Conflict between Parallels Shared Networking and Mac OS X Internet Sharing

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac Standard Edition
  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Standard Edition

Symptoms

Parallels Desktop displays the following error:

Conflict between Parallels Shared Networking and Mac OS X Internet Sharing.

Cause

This may happen if Internet connection sharing is enabled for some network adapter in Mas OS X.

When Shared Network mode is selected for a virtual machine, Parallels Desktop tries to enable Internet connection sharing for its internal network adapter (Shared Network adapter) used to connect the Internet to the virtual machine. However Parallels Desktop will fail to do so if connection sharing is already enabled for another adapter in the system. By design, Internet sharing can be enabled only for one adapter at a time.

Resolution

Disable Internet Sharing on Mac:

1. Open System Preferences;
2. Under Internet & Wireless click on Sharing;
3. Uncheck the Internet Sharing check-box;

4. Close the window.
