Unable to start virtual machine, error message ”Connection failed. The server at may not exist or it is unavailable at this time”, is displayed

Virtual machine does not start, the message below is displayed (server name may vary):


When upgrading from previous versions of Parallels Desktop, Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac is renewing aliases to Shared Windows Applications.  When renewing, Parallels Desktop needs paths to the applications the aliases refer to. Mac OS X tries to find the paths, and if paths are not found, this error message is displayed.


Remove or move to another location all aliases pointing to inaccessible locations from the following directories:





If you could not find all aliases and you are still unable to start virtual machine, please do the following:

Make sure the virtual machine is stopped.  Open virtual machine configuration (Virtual Machine > View Configuration > Options tab > Shared Applications) and clear Show Windows applications folder in Dock.Check box, click OK.  In case you still can not start the virtual machine, try to clear check boxes Share Windows applications with Mac OS X and Share Mac OS X applications with Windows.
